Gorgoroth est un groupe de black metal fondé en 1992, à Bergen en Norvège par Infernus (guitares), Hat (vocaux) et Goatpervertor (batterie). Le groupe a, au fil des ans, changé maintes fois de membres, à l'exception d'Infernus. Le nom "Gorgoroth" est tiré du Seigneur des Anneaux. Toute description de l'idéologie d'un genre musical est destiné à généraliser dans le sens que certaines caractéristiques ne s'appliquent pas à certains artistes. Malgré ce fait, il y a une idéologie claire qui résume l'essence de la philosophie derrière le black metal.

Le black metal contient souvent des éléments de l'anti-Christianisme, la misanthropie, le nihilisme, le paganisme, l'imagerie Satanique, et dans certains cas du racisme et du nationalisme, qu'ils défendent généralement en se réclamant "pluriste" c'est à dire pour un plurisme culturel, expliquant qu'un métissage des populations tuerait toute culture, toute idée, qu'il n'y aurait plus d'opposition, plus de critique et donc plus d'évolution. Mais rare sont ceux qui arrivent a expliquer cela clairement sans tomber dans un racisme et une xénophobie pure et simple : Varg Vikernes, dans son Vargsmal, n'a, par exemple, pas réussi. Mais du coté musical, ils considèrent leur travail comme le résultat naturel de leur misanthropie et de leur isolement social. Généralement, la plupart des musiciens black metal sont très anti-collectivistes, critiques de la religion, et supportent l'individualisme et l'égoïsme rationnel. La philosophie de Nietzsche est peut être celle qui a eu le plus d'impact sur l'idéologie du black metal, avec les liens entre la création d'art et l'expression de vie, et la doctrine des übermensch initiée par Nietzsche et exprimée dans l'apparence des musiciens black metal.

L'attitude des musiciens de black metal est relativement complexe. D'une manière générale, l'apparence est idéologique. Elle démontre, comme pour le death metal, une notion que la mort et les autres tabous macabres du même genre sont en fait des aspects essentiels de la vie qui lui donnent une direction et un sens. Ignorer ces choses serait ignorer une facette importante de la vie. D'une même manière, il y a souvent un lien profond avec la nature qui est accentuée. Ce lien profond est une forme de naturalisme.

La majorité des gens présent dans la scène black metal ne sont ni nationalistes ni xénophobes (ces opinions radicales sont presque exclusives au sous-genre du National Socialist Black Metal), sûrement parce que l'idéologie standard du black metal est influencée par des philosophes anti-idéalistes qui considéraient le racisme comme une forme d'idéalisme.

Malgré ce fait, beaucoup de groupes de black metal épousent une forme de patriotisme qui n'est pas raciste : ils sont plutôt fiers de leur nation, mais ne renient pas le droit des peuples d'autres nations d'être fiers de leur nation. C'est cette partie de l'état d'esprit anti-collectiviste (très proche du paganisme) qui est parfois tenu. Ils trouvent logique que l'homogénisation entre les cultures (et non pas race) est quelque chose à éviter, et que le seul moyen d'éviter cette homogénisation est d'être fier d'être un représentant de sa culture, et de créer de l'art qui est exclusif à cette culture. Cette faible forme de patriotisme est maniféstée musicalement en incorporant des éléments folkloriques dans le travail de certains groupes de black metal.

Il faut également noter que "Hail" (avec un a et non pas un e) , qui est le salut dans le milieu du black metal, vient de l'anglais "to hail" (saluer), et n'exprime pas nécessairement des penchants nazis. [Il est néanmoins utile de préciser que Heil signifie la même chose que Hail. Il n'y a donc, linguistiquement parlant, aucune connotation nazie dans ce mot].
